Northern Lights

Nature paints her own pictures in our northern skies. Through the inspiration of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights), students will learn about this phenomena and create their Northern Lights in chalk pastels.
 

 

 

 

 

Painting With Numbers

Jasper Johns created a series of prints that feature numbers.  Students will use numbers that have personal significance to them to create a chalk pastel masterpiece.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Babylonian Seals – Signets of the Ancient World

Personal seals and signets have long been used in communication.  Students will learn about ancient Mesopotamia and Babylon while developing their own personal signet in soap and clay.
 

 

 

 

 

 

Modigliani – Portraits on Wood

Modigliani, inspired by African masks, developed a portraiture style using elongated faces and tonal blending.  Students will create their own portrait in this oil pastel on wood project.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Impressionistic Monet

Students will use acrylic paints on illustration boards to re-create Monet’s impressionistic masterpiece, “Sunset on Thames” in one of three color schemes.  This guided instruction project will explore Monet’s use of background, foreground, horizon line and reflection.
